The Formation of Arab National Thought in Levant

The Arab world today is shaped by many ideologies that constitute the dynamic movements and change in it. They vary from violent to non-violent, religious to secular, Islamic to nationalist and fundamentalist to modernist. All of them, despite their diversity are characterised by some relation to tradition and modernity. The aim of the work is to analyse the emergence of the most significant schools of thought of the nineteenth and early twentieth century that had serious impact on the later ideological evolution, the formation of states and national identities in the region.The work covers mainly the issues of the attitude of the Islamic world towards modernity, Islamic modernism and fundamentalism, Ottomanism, Arabism and Arab nationalism. The interpretations are situated in the context of the cultural shock of the clash with western civilization, the decline of the Ottoman Empire and struggle against colonialism.The work examines these ideologies, and the major thinkers that represent them such as Rifa'aBadawi Rafi' al-Tahtawi, Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhammad 'Abduh, Rashid Rida, Butrus al-Bustani, ShibliShumayyil, Farah Antun, and Abd al-Rahman Al-Kawakibi.The research is based mainly on the secondary Western and Arabic literature but also on the original works of the thinkers of this era....

This thesis studies the process of formation of Arab nationalist ideas in the period from the second half of the 19th century to 1914. According to the theoretical works on nationalism of Miroslav Hroch and Ernest Gellner it examines the causes and influences, as well as the most important milestones of the development of the Arab nation building process. The work traces the origins of Arab nationalism in the evolution of predecessor ideologies such as Islamic modernism, Ottomanism and Arabism, and studies their mutual relations. In addition to that, it conducts the study of the social aspects of early adherents of Arabism and Arab nationalism. The research is based on primary sources of the participant on the Arab national movement as well as on secondary historical works. Tato diplomová práce zkoumá zahraniční politiku a postavení Sýrie v regionu Blízkého východu. Její směřování bylo do značné míry ovlivňováno válečným stavem s Izraelem a panarabskou rétorikou. Tato práce určuje hlavní body zahraniční politiky Sýrie vůči sousedním státům, stejně tak vůči Íránu. Role Sýrie v oblasti Blízkého východu vyplývala z vytváření konkrétních aliancí se sousedními státy, ale do značné míry byla také ovlivněna rozpadem Sovětského svazu a přechodem k unipolaritě.
